Defend Harlem Updates
(Columbia Negotiations Have Started + Harlem-on-the- Hudson + More)
We are excited to announce (due to the hard work of everyone apart of the Defend Harlem movement) the Columbia University negotiations have begun. The #oneharlem coalition met with leaders from Columbia University, in our first introductory meeting to express our concerns, last Friday 10/18. Now we must continue to educate members of the community on our asks to make sure the university will no longer displace uptown residents. As Al Taylor says, “If you are not at the table you are on the menu”. We will remain diligent and optimistic to ensure a new chapter between Columbia University and the uptown community. Here are our asks:
One of the biggest economic opportunities for Harlem, Washington Heights, and Dyckman is: Harlem-on-the-Hudson. This would be an international tourist attraction that can create: local jobs, ACTUAL affordable housing, business opportunities, celebrate the cultures of (Harlem, Washington Heights, as well as Dyckman communities) and offer much needed social mobility for local residents of color, who are on the verge of being displaced. Please WATCH our recent Harlem-on-the-Hudson video to understand the vision of this much needed project and share it so we can build up more leverage to make this a reality. Community pressure is how we get this done!
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday at 6pm here is the zoom link (this is for outreach, media, research, and fundraising). It will be no longer than 30 min!
